The result of ldap_start_tls() is discarded. If the StartTLS upgrade of the LDAP connection fails (e.g. an on-path attacker answers the StartTLS extended request with a protocol error), execution continues on the still-cleartext connection and a subsequent ldap_bind() sends the bind DN and password in plaintext.
